'ZERO GRAVITY' - by Ronald William (JOSH) Kirby
The late "Josh" Kirby, real name Ronald William Kirby was a commercial artist that sepecialised in Posters and Film artwork. He was responsible amongst others for the artwork for Monty Python's "The Life of Brian", Star Wars "The Return of the Jedi" poster and the artwork on Terry Pratchetts "Discworld" series of Books. His artwork spanned many decades prior to his death in 2001 at the age of 72. He was survived by his partner and ultimately, much of his artwork was auctioned off in Norfolk. The items that I have came from a more recent auction, held by the same auctioneer that undertook the original sale who can provide provenance. I have always collected original art and take pride in ownership and bringing original artwork to a wider audience at a sensible price, hence this and many other pieces I have are currently for sale due to lack of work in my day job.
This painting offered is one of two I have and dates from the 50s or early 60s. It shows Kirby's love of science fiction even at an early stage in his creer depicting "Zero" gravity spacemen floating in another world. It has been done in Poster paint/Guache and shows some signs of ageing on the unpainted sections and margins as illustrated. However, the subject matter is of fine quality as witnessed in the close ups. I can provide further pictures if required.
